  • Regla
  • Tijeras
  • Lápiz
  • Máquina de coser

Copper and fabric magazine holder

Surfing on Pinterest I ran into this magazine holder from the Homedit.com website and I loved the fact that it’s very easy to make and how beautiful the final result is.

This is why I went to buy some copper pipes and, taking advantage of the fact that I had some of this wall tapestry fabric left, I started to work in it.

The truth is, I couldn’t be any happier with the results.

Materials

  • 4x 1/2“ copper pipes each 1 meter long
  • A pipe cutter: you can find them in hardware stores for an estimated price of CLP $4.000
  • 4x   1/2“copper Tees
  • 8x   1/2” copper elbows
  • Adhesive for metal: optional but suggested
  • Nude cotton fabric: if you want to see how did I dyed it, go and see this project
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Pen
  • Sewing machine

Corta las cañerías de cobre hasta obtener:

  • 2 piezas de 50 cms.
  • 4 piezas de 30 cms.
  • 4 piezas de 17 cms.
  • 4 piezas de 10 cms.

Cut the copper pipes to obtain:

  • 2x 50 cm pieces.
  • 4x 30 cm pieces.
  • 4x 17cm pieces.
  • 4x 10 cm pieces.

Don’t get fussed about the pipe cutter. It’s really easy to use! You just have to slide the pipe into the roller wheel and the cutting wheel, tighten the screw (as a press) and rotate it.

Put the pipes aside and move on to the fabric.

Cut a 90 x 50 cm rectangle. On the shorter sides of the rectangle, sew a hem so the fabric doesn’t fray. For this, fold 1 cm of the fabric twice and using the sewing machine stitch straight.

On the 90cm rectangle sides fold it slightly and stitch. Then fold again, this time 5 cm and stitch. The most important thing is to form a tunnel so the pipe can fit and you can hang the fabric.

It’s time to assemble your magazine holder. Start placing the copper tees on the edges of two 17cm pieces.

Then, add one 10cm piece to the top one and a 30cm piece to the bottom one.

• • •

Close the base using 2 elbows and one of the 17cm pipe.

Place the 4 remaining elbows on the upper edges. Pass the fabric through the 50cm pipes and close the structure.

IMPORTANT: In my case I didn’t use any adhesive but I think that’s advisable because some of the pieces can remain loose.

That’s it. Now, enjoy your new magazine holder!

You can play with the design on the fabric or even use PVC pipes and paint them how you want.
