New Job Jar DIY

Celebrate a friend’s new job with this practical and thoughtful gift! Just like our Housewarming Jar, this New Job Jar is filled to the brim with all the goodies that any new employee would want. So, go pick out a few of your favorite office supplies, use paint pens to write a phrase on the front of their jar, and let them know how proud you are!

Materials: A variety of desk supplies, a large glass jar with a lid, a printout of your desired text, tape, opaque paint pen, ribbon

Step 1: Print out your text and tape it to the inside of the jar.
Step 2: Trace over the text with your paint pen and then remove the paper from the inside of the jar.
Step 3: Fill it up with new desk goodies!

I think there should be a mini bottle of liquor in there. 😉
You always need a drink or two after your first day at a new job!

I promise this is a genuine question: I’m from the UK. If I turned up at a new job with my own pencils, people would think I was very odd. Is this more of a symbolic gift, that the recipient would keep at home, or are employees supposed / expected to bring stuff like this to work? I also notice on US TV shows people sometimes decorate their offices, have lamps and things on their desk. We wouldn’t be allowed to bring decor stuff in (maybe one photo), and all stationery etc is provided. Maybe this is two questions: would you expect the recipient to take the gift to the office? and is TV lying to me again, or do people really decorate their work spaces with personal things? So interested in this now!

Jordan – I just gave a friend the new home jar. I did a few things particular to his needs, like a roll of painters tape, some picture hangers, a hide-a-key rock along with some of your great ideas. It was a hit – thank you. Next, this new job jar. I love this idea!

Like The Advicist detects above, you probably wouldn’t be expected to bring your own office supplies to most jobs (hey, maybe it’s a freelance gig?) but I like the idea of gifting cuter or personalized supplies like the washi tape or nice notepads.

Instead I would make it more of an “office survival kit” and include those things that I always forget at home: mints, hand lotion and sanitizer, lipbalm, candy/snacks, tea bags and maybe a mug or reusable lunch container.

To the advicist: yes Americans confined to cubicles can often “decorate” but the company may limit to what degree. I agree, most of these supplies are provided by your employer, however the jar would most likely contain a way cooler version. When I worked in a cubihell I hung a poster of Dan in Real Life. Steve Carrel’s head on a stack of pancakes. His utterly deflated expression always made me smile when I was feeling trapped.

Thanks for all the explanations everyone! I would never be allowed a poster! They would say it was a fire risk and health and safety wouldn’t allow it, or something. Love the lip balm / lotion ideas, I always have a few essentials stacked in my drawers. Also, ‘cubihell’! Love it.

Hi! I love this idea… everything you need in a jar: it’s sweet and helpful too!
What would you put in a jar if it was a present for a new family? A couple I know just had their first baby and it would be a really nice present!
    Thank you,
    Margherita
